The Art of Bespoke.
For the discerning client, their home demands to be as stylish and original as their personal wardrobe. It also creates an opportunity for the client to own a narrative around their design choices – why did they choose particular materials for an original piece of furniture, how has that piece been made and by whom? The more interesting the narrative, the more value it can have to the client – a reflection of their passion for outstanding creative craftsmanship. Bespoke pieces are also the antithesis of mass-produced goods and create a wonderful talking point for the client within their home.
Atelier NM’s Senior Designer, Trisha Walton, explains more about the studio’s approach to bespoke design:
“At Atelier NM we thrive on the process of conceptualizing and designing bespoke furniture. Diverse materials, shapes and finishes provide an opportunity to be truly innovative when it comes to the creative process. Whilst a new piece maybe inspired by classic design principles, form, function and aesthetic are all given equal consideration to ensure that an item is perfectly suited to its new owner.”
“The process begins with an in-depth chat with our clients – establishing their wants and needs at the offset means that it’s far easier to exceed expectations and create something exceptional that perfectly suits their needs. Where will the piece be placed? How does it need to work with other items in the space? Are there any existing materials in use that need to be matched on the new piece such as wood tone, or brass handles? What are the ergonomic requirements – are the clients particularly tall for example? This could impact the height of a chair or an office desk. All of these personal details are so important to create not just aesthetic impact but also timeless appeal and practical useability.”
“Social media can be a blessing and a curse when it comes to designing bespoke pieces. There is so much inspiration and rich imagery available on Instagram, Pinterest and other social media platforms so when it comes to creating something truly unique it can be challenging not to be swayed too much by another designer’s work or specific detailing. At Atelier NM we pride ourselves on originality and often develop conceptual mood boards at the start of the process that help us to take our cues from nature or abstract imagery. It gives direction to the creative process and establishes a mood and colour palette from the offset.
With sketches, material palette and dimensional form established we develop technical drawings which are passed onto our trusted suppliers and collaborative artisans to feedback and refine where needed to ensure that the item is practical to make, will be safe, sturdy and perfectly balanced.
We recently designed a ‘hero’ piece for a living/dining space in a prestigious new development in central London. We wanted to create something that was inspired by the natural beauty of wood and some of the angular architecture of the building. Starting with a basic shape, we reviewed comfort, conversational distance and the unique nuances of the angles. We added in curved legs at the base to add softness against the geometry of the top and finally, we designed the veneer pattern which would add interest and detail.”
“Once in production we are able to share photographs of an item’s progress with our clients, courtesy of our collaborative manufacturing partners, who take as much care and attention to every piece as we do.”
Finally, we work with specialist white glove transport teams to ensure that our pieces are delivered safely and carefully to their final destination. If you’d like to learn more about commissioning a bespoke piece of furniture or rug do get in touch with us studio@atelier-nm.com
